Mountains & Landscape: A Group Exhibiton Wayne Thiebaud, Heart Ridge, 2011
Crown Point Press announces new drypoints by Wayne Thiebaud, who worked in our studio this past spring. He first began working at Crown Point in 1964, and has completed sixteen print projects since that time. Although perhaps best known for his images of sweet treats, Thiebaud’s impressive body of work also includes portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. He maintains a dedicated interest in the unique geography of Northern California and during his recent visit he created five drypoint prints depicting its hills and mountains, subject matter he has increasingly explored over the last several decades. For these new prints, Thiebaud chose the physically demanding technique of drypoint. Using the unpredictable process of carving directly into metal with a needle, he created a rich line quality and character that can only be achieved through the intaglio process. In these black and white drypoints, titled Diagonal Ridge, Heart Ridge, Land Cloud, Sierra Cloud, and Mountain Smoke, Thiebaud creates beauty with his straightforward, distinctive touch. He enlivened each image differently. One has sweeping, vertiginous angles, others have charming heart-shaped shadows, encircling clouds, or billowing smoke. All contain Thiebaud’s unique sensibility. Also on view in the gallery is Landscape: A Group Exhibition which includes prints inspired by rural and urban scenery. In the portfolio titled Why Draw a Landscape?, 1999, eleven different artists created etchings responding to the question. Ed Ruscha used direct gravure for the spray painted effect in his print Van Ness, Santa Monica, Vine, Melrose, where he overlapped and intersected Los Angeles streets. English sculptor David Nash created an image titled Ash Dome, which is a study for a ‘living sculpture’ where he planted ash saplings near a hillside in Wales. Sylvia Plimack Mangold, Jane Freilicher, Pat Steir, Robert Bechtle, Tom Marioni, Bryan Hunt, April Gornik, Joan Nelson, and Anne Appleby also contributed to the portfolio. The resulting works demonstrate a remarkable variety of interpretations, where the artist’s etchings are as varied as their approaches to art making. Other artists included in the group exhibition are Darren Almond, Mamma Andersson, Yvonne Jacquette, Alex Katz and Jockum Nordström.
