Artists’ Talk: Takehito Etani and Ellen Lake
The Kala Gallery’s programs also include a monthly talk by members of our community. On Thursday, August 28 at 7:00 pm. Kala will host a gallery talk by artists Takehito Etani and Ellen Lake. Takehito Etani uses the term “Spiritual Prosthetics” to describe his recent works. The “Spiritual Prosthetics” are odd and paradoxical gadgets designed to remedy the divide between technology and the human body by meshing elements of spirituality and religion. The works involving the “Spiritual Prosthetics” take various forms including live performance events, video and photographic works. Takehito received his BFA from Pratt Institute where he focused on Interactive Media. He received his MFA from Carnegie Mellon in 2006 and he has been awarded residencies at Djerassi, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and Skowhegan. Takehito’s work has been presented internationally in a wide variety of film and video festivals and is currently on view in The Exploratorium’s “Second Skin” exhibition. Ellen Lake’s work combines vintage home movies from the 1930’s and 1940’s with cell phone and digital video technology. The source material for Ellen’s current project is a collection of deteriorating 16 mm films that were unearthed in her grandmother’s closet. Her work comments on the rapid evolution of technology with regards to nostalgia and preservation, the personal diary and collective memory. Ellen received her MFA from Mills College in 2002 where she studied sculpture, film, video and installation. Her work has been widely exhibited including presentations in the Bay Area at The Lab, New Langton Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and The Exploratorium. Ellen received the Bay Area Video Coalition’s 2005 Media Maker Award. Additionally, we are proud to say that Ellen is Kala’s Development Associate. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us in the Kala Gallery on Thursday, August 28 at 7:00 pm for an interesting evening with Ellen and Takehito. This event is free and open to the public, so invite a friend. Refreshments will be served.
