More Sketches of Spain – For Miles DavisPost an Event »

Reception: Oct. 22, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. George Condo recently moved to main stage in the art world with his retrospective at the New Museum early this year, hailed by the New York Times art critic Holland Carter as “sensational”. In recent years, collectors have vigorously pursued his work. So it will be a rare opportunity in the San Francisco Bay Area to see his etchings & aquatints from 1991 which display his iconic surrealistic mash-up of old and modern masters and superb draftsmanship. “More Sketches of Spain” is 12 large–scale sheets and smaller work that merges Spanish masters with Condo’s profound admiration for the music of Miles Davis. His major painting from the Whitney Biennial in 1987 entitled “Dancing To Miles” is in the Eli Broad collection. Condo’s interest in music took a provocative turn when he collaborated with Rap star Kanye West in his record cover “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. George Condo was born in 1957 and had early associations with the avant-garde artists of the eighties such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His influence in culture is broad collaborating with literary figures including Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and David Means. He is also credited with influencing significant contemporary artists such as John Currin, Cecily Brown and Lisa Yuskavage.
