Drawings and Paintings Untitled no. 54, oil and true gesso on panel, 13 x 9 x 1-1/8 in.
Opening Saturday, October 22, 3 to 6 pm “…. Léonie Guyer's reductive drawings attend to shape as a kind of powerful reverse explosion. Her quizzical forms gather the energy around them into a super-potent visual moment.” Lawrence Rinder (excerpt from “Form +” catalog essay, 2008) littlebigspace is pleased to present the work of San Francisco artist Léonie Guyer with an opening reception Saturday, October 22, 3 to 6 pm. Guyer’s paintings and drawings explore idiosyncratic, nuanced, shapes and the spaces they inhabit. The complex surfaces of her paintings and precise, subtle variations of her drawings reflect an inherent physicality. At the same time, underlying actions, inferred colors, and a sensitivity to space evoke a unique gravity, which calls to mind the Miles Davis dictum: “Don’t play what’s there, play what’s not there.” Guyer’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues such as: The Cooley Gallery, Reed College; lumber room, Portland, OR; Triple Base Gallery, San Francisco; The Shaker Museum & Library, New Lebanon, NY; Gallery Joe, Philadelphia; PLUSkunst, Düsseldorf, Germany. Guyer has collaborated on book projects with poets Franck André Jamme and Bill Berkson. Her work is included in the permanent collections of the Berkeley Art Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Reed College Art Collection, the Shaker Museum & Library, the Yale University Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, and the Columbia University Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Born in New York, NY, Guyer received an M.F.A. and B.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is an Adjunct Professor of Painting/Drawing at the California College of the Arts. littlebigspace is an alternative space for the visual arts in Albany, California, which features work by artists from various locales. We will close for the Winter and reopen in the Spring; please stay tuned.
