Individuals "Individuals" kinetic installation @ Vessel Gallery
Locust from the kinetic installation are offered and available for $25 50% of net sales from "Individuals" benefit Alameda County Food Bank "For a long time I have had intense anxieties relating to the world’s overpopulation. Growing up in the sparsely populated environment of Alaska, then moving to Oakland, California, amplified this anxiety. I believe we are walking a line of human behavioral evolution. We are adapting to population growth, consciously or subconsciously trying to find a balance within our human nature to allow for successful cohabitation. The Cycle uses the locust as a metaphor for my fears of human population growth falling out of balance with a sustainable environment, ultimately becoming a self-sabotaging mass of consumers whose end will only be seen once the last blade of grass is gone or a massive natural disaster resets the cycle. I see many socio-biological similarities between humans and certain species of insects. For example, we have figured out ways to cheaply and efficiently produce sugars both literally and metaphorically for the public’s mass consumption. We have eagerly refined ways of communicating to others with minimal effort and maximum output. As our population grows, our living situations take on aspects similar to those of a hive or colony. Our consumption habits are exponentially ceaseless and unrelenting." - Cyrus Tilton Vessel Gallery is pleased to announce Cyrus Tilton’s latest body of work in a solo exhibition. “The Cycle” shows through Saturday, October 29th. This show explores parallels between locust swarms and humanity's habits of mass consumption and over-population, through sculpture and site-specific installation. Art of natural science meets creepy kinetic deliverance. This spectacle of a show is not to be missed! Fifty percent of net sales of “Individuals” (the site-specific kinetic installation) will benefit Alameda Food Bank. “This body of work by Cyrus is a fine example of an artist who taps into the collective subconscious of humanity. “The Cycle” reveals the self-defeating and contradictory behaviors of society. Most will be moved to discomfort and reflection. Hopefully the audience will experience both an internal shift and a change of behavior. I urge everyone to see this show, as being enveloped by a giant locust swarm can quite possibly illuminate us with hope.” - Lonnie Lee, Gallery Director and Artist Representative
