Workshop: Landscape of Identity with Monika Codourey and Alina Mnatsakanian
Workshop: Landscape of Identity with Monika Codourey and Alina Mnatsakanian October 22, 2 pm, Walter and McBean Galleries San Francisco Art Institute 800 Chestnut Street San Francisco, CA 94133 The workshop Landscapes of Identity is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Think Art-Act Science, on view at the San Francisco Art Institute through November 12. Participants in this workshop will create a visual and written narrative of their movements by mapping relationships between the movement and the various elements surrounding or affecting the person and his/her identity. Participants will have the opportunity to share their life journey in relation to a timeline with real emotional landscapes and see the resulting mapping at the end of the project. The workshop will be led by artists Monika Codourey and Alina Mnatsakanian, who participated in the Swiss artists-in-labs program, completing an immersive nine-month residency in a scientific research institute. Monika Codourey was an artist-in-lab at the Human Computer Interaction Lab at the University of Basel, studying spatial awareness and emotions. Her work traces the emergence of new socio-technical practices (e.g. surveillance, social sorting, biometric authentication), which influence the patterns of our movements and presence within transportation systems. Alina Mnatsakanian was an artist-in-lab at the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence. A recurring topic in her work is the theme of movement in its formal and socio-political aspects, encountered through media including painting, video, installation, and robotics. Her research about identity in relation to territory and language sometimes takes an autobiographical form.
