Nicole Eisenman moves deftly in and out of genres, sifting through history and contemporary philosophical as well as personal concerns. She came to prominence in the early 1990s for her witty figurative installations combining mural painting, sculpture, drawing, and multi-media work, often viewed through a lens of gender politics. Moving between representation and abstraction, Eisenman addresses overarching human themes of love and friendship, isolation and mortality. Eisenman’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects; Leo Koenig, Inc., New York; Plateau le Frac, Paris; and the Walter and McBean Galleries at SFAI. She has been included in group exhibitions at the Jewish Museum, New York; Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and ICA, London, among others. Her work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; SFMOMA, San Francisco; Denver Art Museum, Denver; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Ludwig Museum, Cologne, Germany. Eisenman is a Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellow for Interdisciplinary Painting Practices. The event is free and open to the public.
