Landscapes of Consciousness
Weinstein Gallery will be host to a group show featuring a circle of artists at the beginning of Lucid Art. Landscapes of Consciousness is the cumulative effort of six decades of painting from a close-knit group of five Bay Area artists, whose stated intention was to comb their consciousness for connections to the universe using meditation, lucid dreaming, deep ecology, and art. The show runs from September 19th through October 19th at 301 Geary Street. In 1947 the Surrealist painter Gordon Onslow Ford moved to California and declares a new direction in his art based on the transformation of awareness through the exploration of “inner worlds”, and is given a retrospective at the San Francisco Museum of Art (now SFMoMA) called “Towards a New direction in Painting”. Over the next several years Onslow Ford meets Richard Bowman, John Anderson, Jack Wright, and Fritz Rauh, forming an artist nexus based on Lucid Art. Jack Wright and John Anderson were invited by Onslow Ford to build their homes on his nature preserve in Inverness, and all five artists both experimented and exhibited together. All of the artists would meet at Onslow Ford’s house every week with some of the great thinkers of the time including Alan Watts, Ruth Asawa, and Isamu Noguchi, thus solidifying a specifically California movement of an interdisciplinary dialogue in arts based on consciousness and the cosmos. Weinstein Gallery is located at 301 Geary Street, San Francisco, CA 94102; (415) 362-8151, open seven days a week from 10-6 PM. Landscapes of Consciousness has been curated by Fariba Bogzaran, director of the Lucid Art Foundation, and is jointly organized by Weinstein Gallery and the Lucid Art Foundation (www.lucidart.org)
