Vessel Gallery, 471 25th Street, Oakland, CA 94612, 510 893 8800 Gallery Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11-6PM "It is with much excitement that we open 2012 presenting the distinctive works of Beili Liu, including a powerful and compelling site-specific installation created for Vessel Gallery. This may be one of Beili's boldest works to date and we are very honored to be able to present this here in Oakland, CA. Her newest process drawings document and present the artist's process of moving ink on birch panel, meanwhile the sumi ink functions as a metaphor tracing the energy of life, no matter how substantial or fleeting. Evidence of time and its traces leave us inspired by beauty, hope, and quite possibly justice. As we sort the meaning and direction of the Occupy movement, visit Vessel to experience "Stalemate" and her solo show; you'll be enveloped by the pause this artist's work evokes. The arrival of Liu's latest creation couldn't be more timely." - Lonnie Lee, Gallery Director and Artist Representative Beili Liu's time and process based installations mine themes of cultural specificity and overlaps, transient or persistent energy, and conflicting and confluent forces. Thread, paper, incense, wood, salt, water, these simple materials and compounds are the vehicles by which Beili Liu hand crafts microcosms of fragility and poignancy. By working on these everyday materials, Liu manipulates their intrinsic and bare qualities to extrapolate much more complex cultural narratives. Art in America Review has commended her works for being “materially simple but metaphorically rich” (Janet Koplos, April 2009). Beili Liu is a multidisciplinary artist whose artwork has been exhibited and published extensively both nationally and internationally. She has held solo exhibitions at venues such as the Hå Gamle Prestegard, Norwegian National Art and Culture Center, Galerie An Der Pinakothek Der Moderne, Munich, Germany, Elisabeth de Brabant Art Center, Shanghai, Asia Unlimited Gallery, Berlin, Germany, Nordisk Kunst Plattform, Brusand, Norway, Hua Gallery, London, and the Chinese Culture Foundation, San Francisco. Liu has participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Art and History, Santa Cruz, the Austin Museum of Art, Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Granary Gallery, Fiskars, Finland and the Kaunas Biennale—a survey of international cotemporary fiber art, hosted by the National Art Museum in Lithuania. Liu’s work has received critical reviews in Art in America, Sacchi Review, UK, Helsinki Sanomat News, Finland, Stavanger News, Norway, China Daily, Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art, Ceramic Art And Perception (Technical), Australia, San Francisco Chronicle, Art Slant Los Angeles, Buffalo News, and Detroit Metro times, among many others. Liu has received awards and prizes including artist fellowships at Art Farm, Djerassi Resident Artist Program, Fiskars Onoma Foundation Artist Residency, Finland, and Fundación Valparaíso, Spain. Her solo exhibition In Between was named one of the “Top Ten Exhibitions in Shanghai” in 2009 by Sacchi Review, UK. She received the San Francisco Major’s Award for her contribution to cultural exchange in 2008. Most recently, Liu received a Distingction award at the Kaunas Biennial, Lithuania.
