Taking Stock Leah Rosenberg, Stacks
Opening Reception: Friday, January 6, 2012, 6:30-8:30pm Photographer Emily Heller and painter, sculptor, and cake-maker Leah Rosenberg investigate the ways in which food is reconfigured into a packaged commodity. Both artists are interested in the intersection of art and food, and here they present their individual projects as well as a collaborative piece. Now based in different cities, Emily (Denver) and Leah (San Francisco) were presented with the challenge of collaborating on a piece for this show while miles apart. They began by creating a simple set of guidelines to follow on daily forages to their local grocery stores. Each day served up a new assignment involving colors or shapes or patterns to be found and documented or replicated in some way in their respective mediums, for the duration of a month. Like checking something off the grocery list, this set of tasks became part of the daily routine, providing a reliable structure in which experimentation could occur and parallels between the artists’ findings could be highlighted. Working with the same recipe, in diverse places and by way of different processes, the artists explore and abstract the bounty of food available at our fingertips.
