I Know How You Feel Outside
Rowan Morrison Gallery is pleased to announce a solo exhibition of paintings by Michelle Huber. Michelle’s paintings focus on people and the landscape as a means to explore the awareness of self in the context of nature. The exhibit, “I Know How You Feel Outside,” will feature large-scale mixed media paintings, along with a collection of vibrant watercolors. Huber’s work displays a playful approach to her chosen medium and subject matter. She utilizes a range of bright and muted colors, as well as a variety of textures, materials and methods. The artist’s mixed media works are constructed using collaged layers of topographical maps on wood panels, which are alternately painted over and sanded away. These sanded surfaces reveal vestiges of previously depicted forms, lending clues to the process of the works’ creation. Through these elements, Huber generates elaborate landscapes occupied by people who seek leisure and recreation in the natural environment. The artist takes her inspiration from a diverse set of sources including foreign travel, the wonders of nature, popular science, and extensive internet image searching. Huber’s paintings offer a balance between the abstract and the figurative, allowing the viewer to draw upon his/her own understanding of the relationship between self and environment.
