A simple vibration exhibits nature’s dependence upon the presence and flow of electronic pulses. These fundamental forces of nature can be extracted by artists who create and use tools to amplify their presence, bringing them to an audible surface framed by sonorous tones, humming timbers, and high frequency crackles. Kaffe Matthews’ (AIR ‘08) ambient landscapes from these unseen energies and taps into technology-driven devices to create installations, real-time performances, and musical scores of city navigation. Walter Kitundu (AIR ‘08) creates organically powered hand-built instruments that act as a link and respond to the resonances of the natural world. Ellen Fullman (AIR ‘08) uses large open performance spaces to string and construct musical instruments that rely on physics to produce melodic fragments that intertwine and unfold.
