Paul Clipson, Alexander Cheves, and Walter Logue are Bay Area-based artists working in film/video, painting and sculpture. For Walk Softly Stranger at Incline Gallery, the three come together to discover the physical nature of the gallery’s upward ramps, its obscured dark angles and narrow passages. While working in different mediums, they share a related conceptual approach to making art - formalism combined with a pursuit to explore the physical space around their work.
Paul Clipson is a filmmaker and video artist who creates multi-layered visual collages emphasizing the immediacy and unpredictable nature of film as a material. Subject matter, whether natural or urban, is abstracted and superimposed with images, rhythmic editing patterns, and color.
On Friday March 16th at 8:00pm Clipson will be collaborating with Bay Area Musician Jon Porras for a special film and sound performance. Porras’ work focuses on combining open tuned guitar with effects and processing. With clear-cut roots in Americana and West Coast guitar, his work ranges from sparse, fingerpicked passages to densely layered walls of melancholic wash. Clipson and Porras’ partnership allows for a more complete immersion into the video installation.
Alexander Cheves’ paintings and sculptures focus on the intrinsic forms of architectural structures, the awareness of the physical space they consume, and their natural surroundings. Drawing from traditional building materials such as wood, paint, plaster, concrete and steel, Cheves’ representations expose their fundamental components. His compositions reveal industrial traces surrounded by the controlled landscapes of California’s Central Valley.
Walter Logue’s minimalist work explores the means of conveying messages through manipulated text, arrangement and literal interpretation. His three dimensional works consist primarily of white text upon the face of solid black geometric forms. The focus in Walter Logue’s work can be as basic as a single word, a popular catch phrase, or song lyrics. Undertones of humor are revealed but it is the apparent aspects of his work - scale, order, repetition and space, which further his interpretations.
The unique layout of Incline Gallery provides an interesting opportunity for Clipson, Cheves and Logue to explore mediums, structure, and the visual aspects of their work. Walk Softly Stranger allows their work to actively contend with and relate to the physical space surrounding it. Each artist’s individual approach will play a vital role in how the gallery’s features will be accentuated and portrayed in a new light.
