The Remarkables: Endocrine Abnormalities in Art - Book Signing and Talk
Catharine Clark Gallery hosts a book signing and authors’ presentation for the newly released book The Remarkables: Endocrine Abnormalities in Art, with authors Carol Z. Clark and Orlo H. Clark, MD. The authors’ comparative study of the parallel histories of medicine and art considers the ways in which artists depict endocrine abnormalities. Organized thematically, and examined within the larger context of aesthetic, social, and medical history, abnormalities include the goiter, dwarfism, gigantism, thyroid, gonad, and other disorders of sexual development. The discussion established by the authors includes disorder origins, transmission, development, and history of treatment followed by poignant visual examples. Published by UC Press, the lavishly illustrated book examines artists’ documentation and interpretation of diseases that were not at all understood until the late nineteenth century. Visual works included in The Remarkables: Endocrine Abnormalities in Art, reflects frequently incited shocking attitudes toward disfigurement or physical difference common of the time period. The culmination of this authorship stems from Dr. Clark’s medical career combined with Mrs. Clark’s strong affinity for art. Carol and Orlo Clark’s book signing is one of a multi-part event series that commemorates the Catharine Clark Gallary 21st Anniversary Celebration, which recognizes the unique themes and partnerships that have formed the gallery’s identity since it opened in 1991.
