Alice Shaw, Landscape Update
Alice Shaw, Landscape Update Opening with the artist, Friday, March 9th 6 - 9 PM with music by Toshio Hirano Gallery 16 is excited to announce its new exhibition, Landscape Update, with artist Alice Shaw. This is the fifth solo show Gallery 16 has presented with the artist. Alice Shaw is trained as a photographer but regularly employs other media to express her ideas. In this body of work she is looking at the flip side of the romantic tradition of landscape in art. The exhibition presents work in a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture and photography. She is observing the death of painting, the death of photography and the death of the object through our shifting consciousness of the land. There is a photographic theory claiming that men photograph the land while women photograph nature. Meaning, men photograph the sweeping landscapes with its vast grandeur while women get up close and more intimate with the natural world. Two photographers who represent examples of this theory are Ansel Adams and Imogen Cunningham. She pointed her camera into the center of flowers while he turned his camera toward the mountain ranges. In some of Shaw’s previous work she has examined the fact that she sees herself as more masculine than feminine. After contemplating this theory of male versus female photographers she decided to put her hand (or eye) to work representing the land. The exhibition will run from March 9th to April 21st.
