The Biology of Ancestry in the Making of Now Prayer to the Cells Within Me, mixed media on wood panel, 36x84"
Opening Reception: Friday, April 13, 2012, 6:30-8:30pm Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Friday, 1-5pm The Biology of Ancestry in the Making of Now is a recent series of mixed-media paintings that explores the interweave between past and present, biology and identity. How do our ancestors live through us, and how do we remake ourselves anew? About his art, Todd Thomas Brown writes, “I am the living sum and dynamic of my ancestors before me, a complex and nearly indefinable amalgamation of characteristics that have travelled and mutated across time, from one organism into the next. My work maps a personal search into the intricacies of identity, informed through a poetic inquiry into idea of personal biology. Past and present are superimposed, the social-political realities of today are interwoven with an immensity of personal histories of all who came before. How do we live with the many of who we are?” Todd Thomas Brown is a multi-disciplinary artist based in San Francisco, California. He is the founder of the Red Poppy Art House and the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP), and is an advisor for EDELO artist space in Chiapas, Mexico. Brown has been awarded grants from the San Francisco Foundation and Zellerbach Family Foundation for his work with music ensemble Nefasha Ayer. He was among the first three artists to be selected for an experimental Artist Fellowship program at San Francisco’s de Young Museum, sponsored by the James Irvine Foundation’s Innovation Fund. Brown’s large-scale mixed-media works have been exhibited across the U.S., Mexico, Argentina, and Peru.
