Traces of Time
HANG ART presents Traces of Time, a solo show of recent paintings by San Francisco artist Jennifer Damas. A reception for the artist will be held on First Thursday, October 2, 2008 from 6-8pm at 556 Sutter St, San Francisco. Jennifer Damas' recent works explore the surface markings and texture of the artist's family heirlooms. Rendered large on canvas, these markings become richly layered abstractions that bear strong evidence of the artist's hand and read almost as a record of her creative process. As viewers, we are tempted to study an abstract painting closely in order to assemble the depicted image into something identifiable. What we see can be as recognizable as a landscape or a rusty nail, but no sooner do we find a place of focus before it fades into the painting. The ultimate reward of Damas' paintings is that our engagement with the works increases over time, and the layers of meaning and representation reveal themselves continuously.
