Blue Turns to Grey Jonathan Runcio. C.M.U, 2012; diazo blueprint; 36 x 24 inches.
Ratio 3 is pleased to present Blue Turns To Grey, a solo show of new work by Jonathan Runcio, February 24 - April 7, 2012. In this exhibition, Runcio transforms the gallery with architectural elements that dissect the space. New works include screen print paintings on tarnished brass panels, three dimensional architectural blue prints, and sculptures made from steel, stone and concrete. The artist’s ambitious manipulation of the gallery space closely parallels his art making practice and underlying interest in the transformation of architectural ideals. As referenced in the exhibition's title, Runcio considers the inevitable deterioration of material in man-made environments. The artist repeatedly expedites this state of transformation by removing elements from their origin, breaking them down into smaller sections and rebuilding a new context and existence for further consideration. The paintings on brass present abstracted imagery in a restricted, monochromatic black palette on an oxidized underpainting. The inherent nature of the brass points to the title of the show, slowly and subtly changing, continuing to tarnish over time. In a similar spirit, he wrapped ubiquitous concrete building materials with architectural blue prints and exposed them, creating an abstracted monoprint of the original three dimensional form while embedding creases and folds into the now object-like, paper surface. Runcio makes his sculptures by using welded steel merged with the unrefined qualities of stone and concrete. The smooth edge of the steel or molded surface is met by a drastic transition into the rough surface of the overflowing concrete or coarse stone. Runcio’s combination of formal and informal components walk the delicate line between control and chance, challenging the versatility of materials and our understanding of objectivity while blurring the boundaries of conventional media and cultural aesthetics. Jonathan Runcio was born in 1977 in Montreal, Canada. Currently he lives and works in San Francisco. He earned an MFA in Sculpture from the California College of the Arts in 2011 and a BFA in painting from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1999. He is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Grant in 2011. This is his fourth solo exhibition at Ratio 3. GALLERY HOURS: TUESDAY–SATURDAY; 11am–6pm, and by appointment.
