Jeanne C. Finley, artist and filmmaker
Rudolf Frieling, curator of media arts, SFMOMA
SFMOMA Phyllis Wattis Theater
This screening adds historic perspective to the SFMOMA exhibition "Descriptive Acts" by showcasing seminal narrative experiments made between 1975 and 1992. John Smith's early linguistic research in "Associations" is an ideal introduction to Gary Hill's "Primarily Speaking." Jeanne C. Finley's confrontational use of image and text in "Accidental Confessions" is at times humorous and absurd, but she ultimately establishes a critical political perspective on the military's mass media spin in Involuntary Conversion. The program ends with Smith's "The Black Tower," a hilarious tour through a British urban landscape.
$5 general; free for SFMOMA members or with museum admission (requires a free ticket, which can be picked up in the Haas Atrium).
