Crappy Birthday is an exhibition of artists probing the darker side of birthdays: the anxiety of unmet expectations, in the wake of anticipation and celebration by others. The works feature cakes uneaten, parties unattended, and cruel reminders of another year passed, all within the trappings of gaudy colors and party favor ephemera. The closing reception will be a chance to exorcise past birthday traumas with cake, booze, and merriment. Famed critic Mary P. Cravens writes, "An interdisciplinary tour de force, 'Crappy Birthday' reconciles Clement Greenberg's distinctions between avant garde and kitsch, merging discussions about fine art and popular arts like never before.
