Halftones Sheila Ghidini, "Eleven Art Books" graphite on paper
Opening Reception Friday June 1, 6 - 9 PM Open during Oakland Art Murmur July 6, 6 – 9 PM Chandra Cerrito Contemporary is pleased to announce Halftones, a solo exhibition by Sheila Ghidini’s. Ghidini’s graphite drawings and sculptural installation transform ordinary objects and explore the forty shades of gray visible to the eye. Her drawings of books were inspired by a recent visit to her writer friend's New York apartment, where she encountered volumes of poetry and art, journals and bound address books. Sensitive renderings of these and other volumes, as individual portraits or stacks, exhibit the artist’s attentiveness to form, detail and the nuances of light and shadow. They also suggest the beauty of the printed medium, which may be in the process of becoming antiquated. Ghidini's large-scale installation, In a Field of Emerging Forms, features found chairs as well as their actual and drawn graphite shadows. The chairs appear partially submerged within or protruding from the gallery walls, floor and ceiling, disrupting one's sense of gravity and material solidity. Sheila Ghidini received her BFA from Hartford Art School at the University of Hartford, West Hartford, CT (1974), completed graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI (1979) and received her MFA at UC Berkeley (1992). Her work has been exhibited at Hunter College in New York City, San Francisco’s Museo ItaloAmericano, the Jewish Museum in San Francisco and the Maier Museum of Art in Lynchburg, VA. This is her fourth exhibition at Chandra Cerrito Contemporary.
