Don Soker Contemporary Art is pleased to announce a site-specific installation by Christel Dillbohner, Nothing is Certain - Fragments from The Arctic Chronicles, July 14 - August 25, 2012. The opening reception is Saturday, July 14, 4-7 pm. Artist talk 5 pm. The exhibition contains a selection of artifacts from The Arctic Chronicles, and a series of new paintings on canvas, wood and paper. Geological structures and glacial lobes, cloud masses and arctic seas are the underpinning of Dillbohner’s paintings. The paintings’ layers are generated more than they are painted or drawn; surfaces scored and scraped, pushed and pulled, oscillating between principles of randomness and control. She experiments with fluid, changeable materials such as hot and cold wax; adding ink and water to liquefied pigments. In this flooding of paint all boundaries of distinction are lost. Dillbohner will also present a new series of assemblage boxes made of weathered wood and rusted metals, plant material and old photographs collected over the years. These assemblages form The Arctic Chronicles which are evidence of the history of polar journeys, as well as addressing the present melting of the poles and glaciers, and documents of memories of the future. Dillbohner was born and educated in Cologne, Germany, and has lived in California for over twenty years. She has had extensive exhibitions nationally and in Europe and Asia and has received numerous awards and grants.
