Eli Geiser “Spilt Milk” & Alumni Artists “Transits and Returns” Eli Geiser "Spilt Milk"
Eli Geiser: Spilt Milk Exhibition dates: August 2 - September 8, 2012 Artists' Reception: Saturday, August 4th from 4-7pm (with an Artists' Talk at 5pm followed by a performance by Chris Van Pelt) Swiss born artist Eli Geiser shows two distinctively different groups of new works. The "language pictures" are strictly geometrical compositions with visual words written in an originally developed color-alphabet. These precise, conceptual paintings contrast sharply with Geiser's second group of new work -- carefully crafted assemblages of witty and evocative found objects. Although the two groups speak in different languages, the artist's tone consistently reveals a playful joy in collecting both words and materials. Eli Geiser was born and raised in Switzerland and has lived in San Francisco since 2007. Eli was originally trained as a ceramics painter, before receiving her degree in Zurich as a teacher of handicraft and textile works. Her work has shown in galleries throughout Europe and the USA. ----- Group Show: Transits and Returns Artists' Reception: Saturday, August 4th from 3-6 pm. Artists' Talk at 4pm. Since our inception in 2006, Mercury 20 has drawn a diverse group of talented artists, whose work is contemporary and provocative. Some of these alumni return to catch us up with their current work, in a show curated by Joan Weiss, an original member of Mercury 20. Arthur Huang documents time spent waiting for trains in Tokyo (where he now lives) in a series of drawings on rice paper scrolls. Patricia Gillespie creates a whirling world of dandelions in kinetic sculpture. Tarra Lyons meticulously crafts oil paintings in the Surrealist tradition, and David Seiler draws on his Mexican heritage to create visceral works of drama and mystery. Other artists include Lisa Rapaport, Therese Browne, Catherine Perillo, Laura Van Duren and Anna Vaughan.
