Manifold + Search and Replace Manifold by John Ruszel, variable width, 14" tall, 4" deep. ash, milk paint, cotton, stainless steel.
Vessel Gallery presents "Manifold" by John Ruszel and "Search and Replace" by Joanne Hashitani John Ruszel's work invokes curiosity about humanity's need to create order by methods of engineering. However, Ruszel's work demonstrates man's innate desire to handle and shape material directly, like that of a builder. These new works conceived at recent Djerassi Resident Artists Program distinguishes how this artist seamlessly connects his desire to perceive and engineer curious structures with his ability to execute and actually craft his not-so-lofty ideas. Complicated and interdependent structures consistently challenge the limits of his selection of materials and moreover, his ideas. We're left with the question; are these metaphors seeking new meaning and symbolism? Whereas, in contrast, Joanne Hashitani imposes symbolic meaning on a delicate and intricate surface of thread or translucent material. It is this artist's process of exerting a tremendous meticulous energy and investment of time that allows for great depth and understanding of her personal visual Morse code. Hashitani takes meaningful data-related events and interprets these into a visual language of her very own, imprinting her ruminations of these fond interests onto her selected materials.
