In-Gallery Talk: Santhi Kavuri-Bauer, Richard Mann, Gwen AllenPost an Event »

As part of the SF State Art Department Faculty Exhibition, art history professors discuss their work and field. Kavuri-Bauer’s research is focused on Islamic architecture in India and how these spaces help produce social and political identities. She has recently turned to the research of abstract art produced by Asian American artists in the 1950s and 1960s in New York. Photography and video produced by artists of the South Asian diaspora was the focus of a show she curated at SF State in 2011. Kavuri-Bauer earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from University of California, Los Angeles. Mann offers a two-semester multicultural course in Queer Art History. His publications include “El Greco and His Patrons and Spanish Paintings of the 15th through 19th Centuries.” He is interested in ways that El Greco’s bold and innovative paintings intersect with diverse aspects of European cultural, spiritual and political history. Allen’s research focuses on the relationship between art and media in the modern and contemporary periods. Her book “Artists’ Magazines: An Alternative Space for Art” (MIT Press, 2011) looks at the aesthetic significance of magazines as well as their social and political significance as alternatives to mainstream art institutions.
