In-Gallery Talk: Jeff Downing, Paul Mullins, Mario LaplantePost an Event »

As part of the SF State Art Department Faculty Exhibition, professors discuss their work. Downing, a sculpture professor, describes his process as “fluid and spontaneous.” Inspired by music, dreams and childhood memories, the originality of each sculpture stems from an improvisational approach. The forms emerge from a swift process of modeling allowing the natural qualities of the material to guide the composition. He studied ceramics at the State University of New York and Academy of Art College in San Francisco and holds an M.F.A. from SF State. Mullins’ work constitutes a decade and a half of painting and drawing that allows for any and all imagery referencing rural American masculinity. He holds a B.F.A. from Marshall University and an M.F.A. from Ohio University, Athens. Laplante’s books and prints have been included in national and international art exhibitions. Curators have acquired his work for several artist book collections including the Bibliotheque National du Canada, Museum of Modern Art in New York, Library of Congress, Yale University, New York Library, Tate Gallery in London and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A professor of printmaking, Laplante holds a B.FA. from Concordia University and an M.F.A. from University of Wisconsin, Madison.
