In-Gallery Talks: Lewis deSoto, Matt Lipps, Julia MarshallPost an Event »

As part of the SF State Art Department Faculty Exhibition, professors discuss their work. A professor in photography, deSoto is known for working in a wide range of media, from intimate to large-scale public art commissions, exploring an equally wide range of themes and subjects. His work is included in numerous public and private collections around the U.S. He holds a B.A. from University of California, Riverside, and an M.F.A. from Claremont Graduate University. Lipps describes his practice as being “in, with, and alongside photography,” as he encounters found, historical and popular images and appropriate them into three-dimensional compositions to be re-photographed and re-contextualized. An assistant professor photography, Lipps holds a B.F.A. from California State University, Long Beach, and an M.F.A. from University of California, Irvine. Marshall is interested in art practice as a form of research and the poetic logic that underlies that inquiry. A professor in art education, Marshall holds a B.A. from George Washington University, an M.F.A. from University of Wisconsin and Ed.D from University of San Francisco.
