Burning the Rice Fields, 2008. Oil on canvas. By Ann West
HANG ART is pleased to present Unbound, a solo show of recent paintings by Ann West. A reception for the artist will be held on First Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 6-8pm at 556 Sutter St, San Francisco.
The paintings in Unbound originate in artist Ann West’s love for the big-sky landscapes of the American west. This body of work gathers together a range of scenes, including views of ghostly railroad cars laboring across the New Mexico desert and panoramas of quiet, fog shrouded hillsides. Unbound represents West’s most abstract work to date, since she began working full time as an artist eight years ago. The images in these paintings are free of the constraints that marked her earlier work, such as lone telephone poles and palm trees. Instead, these are paintings of the wide countryside that resists being constrained or bound by human influence.
