Re-staging / Re-construction / Re-enactment:  A Symposium in conjunction with Einstein on the Beach:Post an Event »

Saturday, October 27, 2012, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Zellerbach Playhouse Free and open to the public The 1976 premiere of Einstein on the Beach: An Opera in Four Acts was a landmark event in music, dance, theater, and opera--bringing together the minimalism of composer Philip Glass and choreographer Lucinda Childs with director/designer Robert Wilson's non-narrative approach to performance to create a work that radically changed expectations of how or what an opera might be in the 20th century. In conjunction with a historic re-staging of EOTB at Cal Performances, this symposium will examine what it takes and what it means to re-create and perform a seminal but rarely-seen work almost forty years after its premiere. The discussion will include both behind-the-scenes insights and scholarly reflection. Participants will include: Linda Brumbach, Producer, Pomegranate Arts Lisa Bielewa, soprano, Philip Glass ensemble Robert Fink, Department of Music, UCLA Frédéric Maurin, Department of Theatre Studies, Université de Paris 3, Sorbonne Nouvelle Alisa Regas, Associate Producer, Pomegranate Arts Mary Ann Smart, Department of Music, UC Berkeley and others to be announced. This program is co-sponsored by Cal Performances and the Arts Research Center, Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities, and Department of Music at UC Berkeley.
