Danielle Giudici Wallis & Diem Chau Diem Chau, "Indochine" (2008) Porcelain plate, silk organza, thread. 7.5 inches in diameter
First Thursday Reception: November 6, 2008, 5:30 - 7:30 pm Mark Wolfe Contemporary Art is pleased to present two simultaneous solo exhibitions of three-dimensional works by Bay Area artist Danielle Giudici Wallis and Seattle-based Diem Chau. Giudici Wallis's surrealistic sculptural works explore "place" and domesticity through the use of architectural references. Fragments of walls and foundations function as boundaries that alternately divide or bind together. Shifts in scale and the use of a controlled viewing field simultaneously amplify and collapse the distance between private and public, interior and exterior, and physical versus psychological space. Giudici Wallis holds an MFA from Stanford University, and has exhibited broadly throughout California and the nation, including exhibitions at the San Jose Museum of Art, SFMOMA Artists Gallery, and GESAI, Miami. Born in Vietnam, Chau came to America as a refugee at the age of seven. Her work combines common items such as wax crayons, plates, cups, fabric and thread to create delicate vignettes of fleeting memory, gesture and form, resulting in works that combine egalitarian sensibility and minimalist restraint. She received her BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle in 2002, and has received an Artist Trust GAP Grant and a PONCHO Artist-in-Residence Award. Her work has been exhibited in New York, Miami, Seattle and Los Angeles, in addition to San Francisco at Wolfe Contemporary.
