Mark Butterworth, optical scientist at Philips Lumileds, will speak at the San Jose Museum of Art on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at 12 PM. His topic will be “An Introduction to Color Science.” The talk, part of SJMA’s monthly Lunchtime Lecture series, relates to the current exhibition Local Color. Butterworth will give an overview of the human visual system and explore how the eye sees the world and how the brain interprets this data. He will also discuss the evolution of color science from the work of Sir Isaac Newton in the 1600s to the science behind today’s digital cameras and displays. The lecture is free with Museum admission of $8 adults ($5 seniors and students). Visitors may bring lunch or purchase food at Café Too in the Museum. As an optical scientist at Philips Lumileds, Butterworth currently works on phosphors and packaging used in high power LEDs. With 32 years of color science and optoelectronics experience, he has held various management and engineering positions at companies including Hewlett-Packard, Agilent Technologies, and Flextronics. His areas of research include digital cameras, scanners, printers, television, projection displays, and luminescent devices. He has degrees in physics and mathematics and holds 32 patents.
