Mariam Ghani, "Fugitive Refrains"

Mariam Ghani discusses the two projects on view in the Worth Ryder Art Gallery, 'The Trespassers' and 'Fugitive Refrains', in the context of her larger practice and her recurring concerns with the ethics of translation, the politics of place, the liminal zone and the buried trace. Both works are connected to a series of projects produced by Ghani in Afghanistan between 2002-4 and 2010-12, which explore Afghanistan's 21st century reconstructions and 20th century histories. 'The Trespassers' also serves as an offshoot of Index of the Disappeared, an archive of post-9/11 detentions, deportations, renditions and redactions and platform for related public and poetic interventions, which has been maintained collaboratively by Ghani and Chitra Ganesh since 2004. Co-sponsored by the Center for South Asia Studies
