Tuesday, November 27th, 7-8:30: “Illusion” How do we understand what’s real? Cumulous, new work by Cara Levine: I am always looking for a way out. I don’t know why and I am not even that clear it is happening until I feel myself migrate towards the door or imagining some possible escape. I get claustrophobic; I think this has something to do with it. Also, I have endured 10 years with a chronic ankle injury which, once in a while, renders me immobile. And as I have learned, my greatest fear is immobility. I have found, there is always an escape hatch–be it imagined or real. Escape is a fleeting notion though: I always have to come back, I always have to live in this world, feet grounded on the floor, materials existing as they are. In the work for this show, I am not only toying with different escape plans and alternate realities, but I am also confronting the locked-in-ness of the real world: Can a cloud hide if it is pulled down from the sky and painted with illusionist patterns? Throwing a steel rope ladder out of a window is likely to act more like an anchor. And lastly, the photographs continue to stretch new realities and forms for objects that already exist.
