Beauty in Landscape + Invisible Gestures Kathy Aoki, Hello Kitty Monument (Canada circa 2007), Stereoscopic image, 2012
Swarm Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Kathy Aoki, "Beauty in Landscape; A Blockbuster Exhibition from the Permanent Collection of the Museum of Historical Makeovers," on view from October 13 - November 25, 2012. "Invisible Gestures," an installation by Camilla Newhagen, will be on view in the project space. Kathy Aoki revisits her role as curator of the fictive Museum of Historical Makeovers in her second ersatz museum show at Swarm Gallery. Learn about an ill-fated attempt to create a Hello Kitty Mount Rushmore, reminisce about the rise and fall of the Princess Era, and discover the contents of a real votive mummy offered to Pharaoh Gwen Stefani. This tongue-in-cheek, must-see exhibition includes faux historical prints, paintings, sculpture and photos that celebrate beauty and cuteness. In the project space, Camilla Newhagen builds on her performance-based practice of sculpture, photography and video and explorations of geological layering and material conditions. In her multi-media installation, a video of the artist in a cubicle-like structure will be presented. Her recorded actions relate to and communicate with various objects placed on the surrounding walls and floor. The gap conceptual gay between place and object is her focus, and the physical impact the wireless age has on one's body is her concern.
