Fortune Teller Russell Tyler, "Fortune Teller", oil, acrylic, and spraypaint on canvas, 2011, 30" x 30"
Opening Reception: Friday, Nov 9th, 2012, 6 to 8pm Russell Tyler’s paintings are, in his words, “a manifested state of frenzy”. Rooted in his origins as a graffiti artist and break-dancer, his work has gone on to collide with neo-expressionism, pop art, and cartoon imagery. The results are colorful canvases frosted with great globs of paint, seemingly squirted willy-nilly over naïve representations such as the iconic “smiley face”. By applying paint in its most raw state, he eschews all conventional rules of painting, creating exhilaratingly fresh work that is both liberating and full of humor. He received his MFA from the Pratt Institute and has exhibited widely throughout the East Coast and Canada. He currently lives and works in New York City. This is his first solo show with Fouladi Projects. About Fouladi Projects: Fouladi Projects offers relevant and inspiring contemporary fine art complemented by carefully curated functional works in an inviting gallery setting. We unite our program with art enthusiasts, whether they are a seasoned collector or a first time buyer. The work continues to span a wide range of mediums including painting, drawing, conceptual sculpture and installation. Through programmed exhibitions, studio visits, artist dinners and performances, we encourage our community to engage in an ongoing integration of art and life. Art fair participation and thoughtful promotion furthers our commitment to supporting our artists and makers on their creative journey and we look forward to introducing them and their work to you. Art is an essential component of living a full life. It provokes us to see things afresh, exalts our senses and connects us to each other and the world in which we live.
