Awful Mountain
White Walls presents "Awful Mountain" a joint show with Richard Colman and Jim Houser opening on Saturday, November 1st from 7p.m. to 11p.m. ending on December 7th, 2008. Richard Colman was born and raised in Bethesda, Maryland but the streets of D.C. were his playground. While attending Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts Colman never imagined creating his work for galleries until he was actually doing it. Colman has the ability to startle and calm his viewers in his often contradictory work that mixes sadistic pornographic imagery with softer colors, textures, and patterns to create whimsical narratives. With background in graffiti, Colman's pieces can be vulnerable to the destruction of art but still manage to lash out with angry imagery screaming "don't erase me!". His pieces are also reminiscent of Byzantine painting telling stories of his life to the masses with a little added blood. Often coined as a "self-taught" artist, Jim Houser became interested in painting through hanging out with art students and friends from nearby RISD. Ditching the University of Pennsylvania for Denny's and a canvas Houser successfully invented himself as an artist. Although most of his work deals in muted color schemes on canvas he has begun to move into installation pieces which allow him to paint straight onto the wall. Houser's characters are humorous and create a playfulness that draws the viewer in making them want more.
