PK Frizzell: Evidence of Things Unseen, Kerry Vander Meer: Red in the Interlude, Cartographies: JoAn PK Frizell
PK Frizzell: Evidence of Things Unseen Exhibition dates: October 25 - December 1, 2012 Artists' Reception: Saturday, November 10th from 5-7pm Oakland Art Murmur First Friday: November 2nd from 6-9pm In a new installation, PK Frizzell uses text, plant materials, and discarded broken objects to explore the nature of mind and memory. The installation is viewed through a grid of lenses, creating a vast and dizzying world. In a second body of work, Frizzell shows us a place where the spiritual intersects with the material, by overlaying viscerally physical surfaces made of studio detritus with shadow images imbedded in glass. PK Frizzell graduated from the art program at UC Berkeley in the late sixties, having studied with Pete Voulkos, Jim Melchert and Ron Nagle. Later, she established a ceramics studio and showed work throughout the US and parts of Asia, and was included in History of American Ceramics by foremost ceramic art historian Elaine Levin. She has participated extensively in juried and invitational American Craft Council shows and competitions. Recently Frizzell has explored and developed new media and methods of producing two and three dimensional work using paper, paint, x-rays, photographs, lenses and digital manipulation of visual information. PK Frizzell has shown with Mercury 20 Gallery since 2010. ____________________________________________________________ Kerry Vander Meer: Red in the Interlude Exhibition dates: October 25 - December 1, 2012 Artists' Reception: Saturday, November 10th from 5-7pm Oakland Art Murmur First Friday: November 2nd from 6-9pm Kerry Vander Meer sets a stage with sculpture and wall pieces that interact with each other for a playful interlude. The works in this show attempt to map the uncharted territories that relate to space, time, and the subconscious. The effort creates work that is at once systematic in process and yet open to changing rules and boundaries. Oakland native, Jo Ann Biagini received her MFA in ceramics from the California College of the Arts in 1993. She has been included in shows at the SFMOMA, Artist's Gallery and at the Harrington Gallery at the Firehouse Art Center in Pleasanton. She was recently included the Art in the Embassies collection. Margaret Chavigny is a painter who works with collage, beeswax and oils. In this work Chavigny continues her investigation of the subtle undercurrents of connection. Using imagery from the enormous cosmos combined with minute internal human anatomy, she creates images in which the mandala's radial symmetry reflects an integrated unity of disparate parts. Maya Kabat received a Master of Fine Arts in 2000 from the University of California, Davis. Notable exhibitions include a solo show at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, San Francisco, California in 2009, and a two-person exhibition at 5 Claude Lane Gallery in, San Francisco, California in 2011 which was reviewed in Art.LTD magazine in September, 2011. This year she will have a solo show in the Caffee Museo at SFMOMA as well as a group exhibition at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder, Colorado. Public collections include Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, Cisco Systems, Palo Alto, and Neiman Marcus Collection.
