MisPLACE is an exhibition of two graduate student of San Francisco Art Institute, Marina Crawford and Marcela Florez that takes the experimental project space of Swell Gallery and splits it into two territories in which the artists will position their artworks in relation to each other. Engaging in this manner allows the artists to explore the liminal tensions of this arrangement in context to socio-politics, history and memory. Marina Crawford makes artworks imbued with latent violence and labor utilizing patchwork textiles in methods that question constructs of female identity in relation to viewer, space and place. Marcela Florez's spatial drawings and prints weave perceptions of political, physical and cultural territories through memory, language and history, creating new narratives that engage a dialog of migratory displacement. These two artists will confront the other's artworks in diverse practices of drawing, painting, printmaking, installation and sculpture, charting new conversations of the complexity of today's cultural, political and social landscapes.
