"Ensembles and Orchestras" presents the viewer with an opportunity to observe visual composition as well as understand how music affects human movement. It is the arrangement, convergence and intersection of our senses that bring forth curiosity and creativity within the works included in this group exhibition. Vessel Gallery seeks to reveal the spirit of music, its power to inspire, and how it becomes central to the artwork itself. The range of mediums included in this show are pen and ink, bronze and found mixed media sculptures, as well as human figures in motion in sculpture and paper collage, and human anatomy rendered in wood and metal. " When I have the opportunity to observe live music, I become fascinated with the body language of the musicians, almost to the point where I no longer can really hear the music. I return to my studio and try to capture the essence of the experience, without using sketches or written notes. My work is all about form and movement. I hope that the viewer can almost hear the music when they see the sculpture. " - Jerry Barrish "Gustav Mahler and I are good buddies; there’s no other way of putting it. In the Bost household, he’s a revered saint. My father worships the man. I received my first real taste of Mahler, through the 1971 film, ‘Death in Venice,’ with Dirk Bogarde as Gustav. Director, Luchino Visconti, took Mahler’s fifth symphony, the adagio in particular, and showcased its beauty. Like the adagio in his fifth symphony, there are movements in the others that I can listen to endlessly; the finale in his third symphony comes to mind. As a lover of details and moments, Mahler brought forth so many special little passages to be enjoyed. Though Gustav was not the most amiable person, he must have liked people a little bit; his music is good at reaching into the human heart and making it spiral and spin. While on leave from conducting the works of other composers, Gustav Mahler wrote his symphonies during the summer months. Unexpectedly, this Mahler Series manifested during that very same season. I chose not to listen to his work while penning colors and patterns to his music in an attempt to have my spirit be the speakers, and pour his ghost onto paper. It was the least I could to do; for him, for Gustav." - Bryson Bost " My passion as an artist is for the depiction of human interaction: the intertwinings of feeling, thought, and experience, expressed by gesture and attitude, that tie us together. These are the birthplaces of stories and of songs. As viewers engage with my work, their experience mirrors the intention I bring to its creation. At the same time, there is a lyrical quality to the physical presence of my work as the viewer's eye moves through the landscape of forms. " - Pamela Merory Dernham " In my work I explore the beauty of the inner and outer body, delving into the seldom looked at or appreciated. I am drawn to the simple beauty of design within the forms, and sculpt the work to be serious but also have levity. Deconstruction of one's self is to explore the separation between who we are and what we are, as we struggle to create meaning. " - Gordon Glasgow
