Bill Jenkins Smoke box, (detail, corner view), 2007, spray paint on wall, 204 x 156 x 84 inches
November 14 – December 13, 2008 Opening, Friday, November 14th, 6-9pm The Jancar Jones Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibit of works by artist Bill Jenkins. Using a spectrum of visually abstract strategies, from subtle textures to large scale phantasmagoria, Jenkins' work constructs a very specifically felt, if elusive, personal phenomenological narrative. For his first solo show, Jenkins will present a selection of sculptural works both painted directly on the gallery walls and constructed in his studio. Speaking of his process, Jenkins notes, "I initially choose colors and shapes through my subjective reactions to them and then build a more familiar, formal syntax to arrange them. This usually means choosing a preformed item from my daily life and using techniques that seem logical to crafts or fort building to change it. The work is not about manipulating materials but constructing and combining palpabilities to create a kind of active portrait of an affect." Bill Jenkins received his MFA from the University of California, Berkeley and his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. His work was most recently included in a group exhibition at Feature Inc. in New York and in a group exhibition at Jancar Jones Gallery in March. He lives and works in New York.
