Recent Paintings by Jenny Dubnau and Works on paper by Elena Sisto
Opening reception, Friday Nov 21, 6 to 8pm; exhibit runs Nov 21 through Jan 3, 2009
Bucheon is pleased to present two exceptional New York artists Jenny Dubnau and Elena Sisto who will both be presenting recent work. The show will open with a reception for the artists Friday November 21, 2008, from 6pm to 8pm and run through January 3, 2009.
Jenny paints realist portraits using photographs as references. Her subjects are shown with every peculiarity of physiognomy and gesture. They are relentlessly unidealized, yet their physical flaws are inextricable from their humanity. The portraits are intimate and sensually painted, but the photographic references remain overt, creating a tension between emotional charge and mediated distance.
Jenny has shown extensively in galleries in New York, Miami and Boston, as well as museums such as the Nationald museums including the National Portrait Gallery and most recently Greenville County Museum of Art. This will be her fourth show at Bucheon. She has been the recipient of the Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, Lewis Comfort Tiffany grant, Pollock- Krasner foundation grant and most recently the New York Foundation for the Arts grant.
Elena Sisto has shown her very touching and painterly paintings at Bucheon, but this will be the first time for her works on paper. Elena describes them as "having an open space, spontaneous in a way that only water media could allow. There are cross currents, meshes with references made to folk traditions, comics and contemporary life."
Elena has always worked with universal themes and utilizes a distinct vocabulary in communicating her ideas. They're personal and funny and cover "love and relatedness, bumping and knocking against each-other, falling and waiting." Starting with familiar elements like a Hopi kachina or a kewpie doll, Elena follows a stream of consciousness in creating her paintings, which have titles like, The Curator", "the Artist" and " the Bardo".
Elena has shown extensively in New York as well as nationally with her most recent solo exhibit at the Katzen Museum Art Center at American University in Washington D.C. Other solo museum shows include the Greenville County Museum of Art and Maier Museum and she has been included in the Corcoran Biennial. The recipient of two NEA,s, Yaddo Fellowship and Hand Hollow fellowship ,she has participated in many important exhibitions throughout the country.
