SHADOW / SHIMMER: the art of Tibor Simon-Mazula and Trius Fernsler

'Isolation' by Tibor Simon-Mazula

SHADOW / SHIMMER: Paintings and drawings by Tibor Simon-Mazula and Trius Fernsler Emerald Tablet 80 Fresno Street San Francisco, CA February 1– 24th 2013 Artist Reception Friday Feb. 15th. 2013 Gallery Hours: Fri. to Sun, 1 – 6pm. Weekdays by appointment. The Emerald Tablet is pleased to present the work of two emerging San Francisco artists, both trained in the excellent academies of Russia and Hungary (respectively): Trius Fernsler and Tibor Simon-Mazula. Their work reflects a shared sensibility for contrast: Tibor’s large, deeply textured canvases present figures viewed from above, seated amidst a tangle of rumpled linen and obscured by deep shadows, the contoured planes of the figure flattening and melding into an abstraction of greys, whites and blacks. Trius’s voluminous figures rise towards us from a shimmering field of abstracted color, seeming to explode in a joyful abundance of rich color, collapsing again into a shimmer of lines and shapes. In addition to oils on canvas, Trius will show a series of beautifully abstracted charcoal drawings on paper. ———– Tibor Simon-Mazula Artist Statement: Tibor’s Website: http://koritar.com/ “In my images, my wife and people around me are the actors, but they are not recognizable individually. They could be anyone else. During the painting process I trust in my actual instincts. It is a refuge, which not only shields from the external world but creates connection with it. I calm down, when the brush caresses the canvas, but when the paint splashes, the palette knife scratches, I break through the grip of the world with the lively expressive action of painting. On the canvas, sometimes thick oil paint mixed with bone ash or marble dust curls and cracks like the dry earth, but some areas of it left empty as if a storm had swept through it.” Biographical sketch: Tibor Simon-Mazula was born in Hungary in 1973 and has been painting for 19 years. Tibor’s works have been featured in exhibits in Europe , San Francisco as well as in Dubai. Tibor has been teaching drawing, art and panting for 5 years to children and adults. While painting is his passion, Tibor has also been in Director positions for graphics design and film making. Tibor’s short films have been screened around the world, including Budapest, Cambridge, Santorini, Tel Aviv, Vancouver, New York, San Francisco, and Dubai. Tibor is currently completing his Masters in Art at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and holds a Bachelors in Art and Mathematics at the University of Szeged, Hungary. His animatied and super8 shorts was awarded in US and Canada. ————– Trius Fernsler Personal Biography (b.1975) Trius’ Website: http://triusart.blogspot.com/ I received a scholarship and studied at Gage Academy of Arts in Seattle Washington with Gary Faigin. I brought my portfolio to St. Petersburg, studied under Chebotarya for one year at The Academy of Higher Painting and with Kalyuta, Govorkov and Zubov at the State Academy of Arts, where I was given extensive training for two years. Chebotarya is a renowned painter, sculptor and architect in St. Petersburg of the first degree. I returned to the US where I continued my education on my own, fully training myself in the techniques of the old masters, in particular reinterpreting paintings and drawings to come to my unique and idiosyncratic style. I have shown extensively through the San Francisco Bay Area, featured in galleries and coffee houses there. Most recently, my work has been shown at Gallery 454 in North Beach, SF, and at Mishin Fine Arts in Union Square, SF, both influential galleries in the city.
