New work by Genessa Kealoha, Jonathan Odom, and Evan Holm.
Show runs December 4th, 2013-February 22nd, 2014. Artist reception Friday, December 13th, 6:30 to 9 pm.
Affinity Cocktail brings together three diverse artists whose work seeks to capture, honor, and preserve time through art. Painter Genessa Kealoha draws inspiration from film, particularly “Final Cut‑Ladies and Gentlemen,” an internationally acclaimed movie re-made from 450 existing films. Evan Holm imagines a world in which civilization has vanished, and pays tribute to human artifacts by "fossilizing" and recording the ghosts of records in plaster, cement, and ink. Jonathan Odom captures time in an endless loop through the “Memorette,” an entirely custom-made film machine that plays interchangeable cassettes containing short film loops with music box accompaniment.
The combined affinity of the various art pieces explores the very nature of the Arts and their attempt to make the ephemeral last forever.
Special concert by All My Pretty Ones and alumni, January 25th, 2014 with video projections by Jonathan Odom.
Special talk by Carlos Montemayor, associate professor in Philosophy at SFSU, discussing the neuroscience behind our capacity to sense and evaluate time. Mid-february 2014, exact date TBA.
