Alex Robbins: Sculptures and Compliments

Tyler Wood Gallery is pleased to present two distinct bodies of new and recent work by Alex Robbins.

By embodying the grid, the sculptures owe a debt to certain minimalist ambitions. Displaying a uniform view from all sides, the assembled modular components deny the sculptural experience of reading-as-circumnavigating-an-object. In addition, they could describe sites in which to place objects. While the sculptures’ scale and proportion push them towards a metaphorical space usually reserved for tombs, temples or prisons—structures where physical movement is limited and contemplation exalted—the spiralling formation and specific materials keep them rotating from sculpture to architectural model to mere matter.

The paintings, which Robbins refers to as “Compliments,” take the ineffable quality of artistic color choice and pokes it in the eye. Meticulous copies of early modernist paintings, these works are executed in the complimentary colors of the originals. The colorful nudes and landscapes of impressionist and expressionist masters are inverted to manifest the after-images that fleetingly form in the rods and cones of the eye. Upending the narrative space of the picture plane brushstroke by brushstroke, they both destroy and fetishize the subjective process developed by the painters.

Alex Robbins has recently relocated to Los Angeles from London where he was living and working for the past 9 years and where he received his MFA from Goldsmiths College. Previous exhibitions include Primer III, Luckman Fine Arts Complex, CSU–Los Angeles, Primitive Accumulation, Fold Gallery, London, UK, 2010.2, MOT International, London, UK.
