At five in the afternoon

At five in the afternoon. It was exactly five in the afternoon. A boy brought the white sheet at five in the afternoon. A frail of lime ready prepared at five in the afternoon. The rest was death, and death alone. -Federico García Lorca, from Lament for Ignacio Sanchez Mejias Interface Gallery is pleased to present Carolyn Jean Martin's At five in the afternoon, an installation powerfully evoking the ever-present specter of war and gun violence in American culture. Consisting of a single painting made with ignited gun powder, toy soldiers and toy replicas of AK-47 and AR-15 rifles, the installation simultaneously suggests the looming shadow of our military industrial complex, incidents of gun violence taking place with increasing frequency across the country, and the early indoctrination of American children into this violence. Like the lines in Garcia Lorca’s poem, “at five in the afternoon, at five in the afternoon,” there is an unsettling mundanity to the ongoing loss of life to which Martin responds. Her installation is both a lament and a quiet meditation on the psychic impacts of this reality.
