Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Art Gallery is pleased to present Atmospheric Conditions an exhibition of new paintings by the artist Victoria Veedell.
The exhibition consists of a selection of paintings based on nature, fashioned from memory and imagination, and imply landscapes not necessarily seen, but felt. Through painting Victoria explores how color and light affect space and the physical sense of place. For her Atmospheric Conditions are more than weather conditions, they elicit a personal response to the landscape. The setting of my work may be abstracted landscapes, but the root of my work is an emotional reaction to the environment.
She writes, “ My inspiration comes from my travels. Travel is an important component in my work, as it allows me to observe and compare gradients of color, light and atmosphere in different geographic areas. On my travels, whether it’s through India, the countryside of Japan or even driving around the back roads of Sonoma, I gather ideas by taking many photographs. Back in the studio I manipulate the photographs, blurring the details at which point they become my inspiration and starting point for the paintings.
My paintings are based on nature, fashioned from memory and imagination, and imply landscapes not necessarily seen, but felt. I dissolve the landscape, leaving only what I consider to be the essence of nature. I hope to draw the viewer to the light and colors that radiate from the canvas and give them pause. I continually examine the effects of light and form in the natural world and living in the San Francisco Bay Area allows for access to an amazing array of Atmospheric Conditions.”
