Breakaway

Opening Reception: Friday May 2, 2014 5:00 - 7:30 PM

break·a·way [breyk-uh-wey]
noun. 1. a departure or break from routine or tradition; 2. a sudden rush down the field by a player or players in an attempt to score a goal, after breaking clear of defending opponents.

Breakaway showcases artists exploring issues of masculinity, consumerism and ritual within the world of sports and fandom. These artists question what it means to be, or how one can become “a man” in relationship to the images of athletes in professional sports. Their own failure to live up to the expectations set by these super-stars is often central to the work. In addition, many of these artists use images of devotion and ritual to showcase the religious way fans love their teams.

Collaborating artists include: Rhys Bambrick, David Lasley, Austin Siegert, Josh Stulen, Ileana Tejada and Blu Voelker. Curated by Emily Reynolds for SFiCA as part of Breakout.

An epidemic has hit the Bay Area, SFiCA: Breakout! 2014. The graduate students of California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute have broken free from their institutional boundaries and have mutated into a hybrid machine of art and thought making. This contagion has going viral, taking over galleries across San Francisco and Oakland beginning in February 2014. SFiCA’s curatorial committee has organized a series of exhibitions showcasing the works of current CCA and SFAI MFAs, fostering a culture of collaboration between CCA and SFAI and between the different graduate programs within both schools.

The structure of Breakout is similar to a music festival with different events happening on several “stages,” including galleries and artist-run spaces throughout San Francisco and Oakland. Breakout focuses in on specific areas of interest under an umbrella theme of institutional critique and collaboration between the two schools and highlights the key concerns of current art practices across the programs.
