CALL FOR ART: Positive Protest Out of frustration, passion, desire and anger, powerful protest art is born. Free Oakland UP is seeking protest art - in its many forms - with empowering, positive messages on subjects both personal and political. By “positive” we mean constructive, powerful, uplifting, challenging art addressing issues of urgent cultural and social importance. Think everything from Guerrilla Girls to Panther, Rosie the Riveter and protest march posters; street art; Picasso’s Guernica and Jose Marti’s poetry. We do not mean hateful, destructive, Trump-related media, propaganda or the like. What we are looking for: Original hand-made signs from protests past and present: posters, paintings, drawings, photographs, videos, sculpture, music on the subject of cultural/social/political change. Art from outside the US is welcome as many countries and cultures have deep traditions of protest art spanning many decades. This is a curated show and not all artwork submitted will be included. All artwork included in the show will be considered on loan to the gallery, unless specified by the artist/owner to be offered for free to the public.
Deadline: Please submit a jpg of your art by June 14 to jocelyn@freeup.us. We will notify you if your art will be included. If mailing in art please include a self-addressed stamped envelope to return. Accepted art drop off by June 25
Exhibition dates: June 29-August 27; Reception: Sunday, July 9, 12 to 4pm
