Carole Jeung: Recent Paintings Carole Jeung, "Built Yellow", 2015, oil on panel, 20" x 45"

Don Soker Contemporary Art is pleased to announce Recent Paintings, an exhibition of oil paintings produced by Carole Jeung during the past 3 years. The paintings in the exhibition are explorations of interior places and how one moves through them. She looks for connections and transitions, where things intersect and react, where parts are hidden and revealed, where the blurs exist. She is thinking about how perceptions shift and change. Carole creates a sense of space on a flat surface by using simple forms and color to find what exists inside and in between. Layering and repetition (both of form and motion) give her a method of investigation and moments of true surprise. As the layers build and time passes, she discovers spatial and color relationships and a structure emerges. These relationships then evolve and adapt over time as she adds and subtracts paint. Some elements insist on staying or disappearing, and colors change. It becomes a balance between letting the materials determine what will happen and imposing control over them.

The paintings take a long time to complete; they follow their own timetable until they feel resolved or settled. The end result exists as a record of an exploration, showing where she has been and what she found there. Recently, Carole has been using a greater variety of forms and colors within each painting, rather than a reduced palette with a repeated single form. The paintings feel more complex. Abstract, unavailable, almost decipherable textures emerge and recede in a terrain of images and color. The resulting paintings are charged zones, successive layers of the marked and the empty, color and space, surface and depth, explored and almost known. She uses lines as a way to give her something to hold onto, like a framework. She says “When I get stuck, I draw horizontal lines across the whole thing. Stacking line segments in different configurations are experiments in creating places. Then they shift or compact. All the things in the paintings are things that do exist in life – they are just not readily seen”.

Carole Jeung received a BA from Stanford University and an MFA from California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) where she is currently on the faculty. A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on Saturday September 24th from 4 -6 pm.
