The Benicia Public Library is proud to present CIRCLING FIBERS, an exhibition by local textile/fiber artist Marty Jonas. The works included in the exhibit are created from diverse and often non-traditional materials, such as bamboo, wire, insect screening, O-rings and slide mounts as well as fabric, thread and yarn. Jonas expertly utilizes numerous textile techniques, including crochet, applique, embroidery, dyeing and felting in these works, which all address the idea or concept of circles and spheres.
A reception for the artist will be held at the library on Saturday, February 21, from 2 until 4 PM. The public is invited to meet the artist.
Artist Statement: Thread can be used in an infinite number of ways, and has the ability to convey messages, alter meanings and transform the ordinary. The tactile quality of fiber, thread and wire, combined with surface design techniques, provide me with the opportunity to speak visually, expressing that which, I cannot express in words. Fiber is an extension of my voice.
My goal is to create works which are complex enough to provide the viewer with interest when viewed from a distance as well as up close. I try to use the medium to its maximum, pushing beyond tradition in hope of sparking the viewer’s imagination, thoughts and memories.
My mother taught me to knit, crochet and sew, and my father taught me to hammer, saw, solder and drill. I cannot remember a time when I was not doing something creative, using threads or cloth with my hands. I studied embroidery at the City and Guilds of London Institute in England from 1993 to 2000 and since then have been creating art which is inspired by patterns, forms and shapes.
Circles, whether simple or grand, surround us in nature, art, architecture and engineering. Elemental yet elegant, the circle has forever mesmerized the creative eye with a simplicity that is perfection. I am transforming threads and other various materials, into circular structures using mathematics, geometric and science. My 3-D global or sphere work is based on origami designs. I challenge myself when picking a technique and material, and create diverse works of art.
